So often I coach educators who are in a spiral of negative self-talk related to student outcomes, parent rapport (or lack thereof), or just general frustration. One negative thoughts feeds a negative emotion which leads to another negative thought feeding another negative emotion and so on. Breaking out of the cycle of negative self-talk can be daunting. This is especially true without strongly developed strategies for changing though patterns and shifting mindset. For some, living inside the spiral of negative emotions can be familiar, comforting even. Breaking out and shifting our mindset can feel daunting. To begin to shift mindset, I start with the phrase "nothing is as important as we think it is, while we are thinking about it." Our minds are our most powerful resource in shifting our self-talk. My focus is on teaching my clients strategies to specially shift thought patterns when negative thoughts creep in. We work through alternate thought patterns, thought strategies and affirmation work that are designed to shift the thoughts and emotions leading to negative self-talk and other undesired behaviors.
